The festival is notorious for its lively all-day, all-night dancing and impromptu marriage proposals often triggered after a few pints at the pub. The dance floor is flooded with spirited party-goers, step-dancing and twirling their dance partners, some decked out in sparkly bling. The next day, we drag our weary butts out of bed and traipse into town for a lookie-loo. The first stop is the Roadside Tavern for a bite and beer tasting, teeming with fatigued festival-goers. Here on the second floor of the pub, Brewmaster Peter Curtin makes a handful of malty ales — none of which are bottled.

Coming from the Irish “Lios Dhuin Bharna” meaning the lios or enclosure of the fort in the gap, there is plenty of archaeological interest surrounding Lisdoonvarna with many ring forts dating back to the Iron Age and Christian era to be found in the area. However, Lisdoonvarna is best known for its Spa Centre and its festivals.
Lisdoonvarna developed into a tourist centre as early as the mid 18th century when a top Limerick surgeon discovered the beneficial effects of its mineral waters. People travelled from near and far to bathe in and drink the mineral waters which are rich in iron, sulphur, magnesium and calcium and were said to provide relief for certain diseases. It was because of the popularity of these mineral springs and the huge amount of people coming here that led to the Lisdoonvarna “matchmaking tradition”.

Reception staff on arrival were welcoming and happy. The owner welcomed us, and was very friendly, welcoming and fun. The room was a good size, and had a big bathroom. Every place was very clean.
Lots of security staff around to ensure only guests were allowed upstairs, which was great. Breakfast was served, including cereal and juice. Big well furnished dining room.
